Aim:
For otosclerosis the preferred treatment is an implantation of a stapes prothesis. During the last five years different new types of protheses have been developed and were applied clinically (e.g. Gold, Teflon, Titanium and Titanium with “clip”). The data of the patients implanted will be evaluated by means of retrospective and prospective research. This project is conducted in collaboration with the University of Reims.
Method:
All pre- and postoperative data of patients with otosclerosis implanted with one of the new types of protheses are being included in a database. By means of this database we can evaluate the effects of the protheses on hearing for different types of protheses. The audiological result will be presented in the form of AHEPS’s (Amsterdam Hearing Evaluation Plots). This study is a two centre study together with the University of Reims (prof.dr. A. Chays). This will allow the comparison between the results from Reims and Amsterdam.
Results:
Our results with titanium prostheses have been published. As well as a comparison between titanium and cult porstheses. Now the data about the new clip titanium piston are reviewed.
Future research:
A prospective study is in preparation. The outcome from this study will be a basis for future developments in order to optimize the benefit in hearing and minimize possible drawbacks of current stapes operations.
